Questions about the Remodel Decision Kit
Including the ones we answer with a no. A page of yeses is a page nobody believes.
What exactly do I get?
11 files that download immediately after payment: about 214 pages in all, 28 dimensioned drawings and 647 fields you can type into. Standard PDFs, fillable PDFs, two Excel workbooks and one Word document. No account, no app, no subscription.
Is this a subscription?
No. One payment, and the files are yours. There is nothing to cancel, nothing expires, and no card is kept on file for a later charge.
Does it work outside the United States?
Yes. Every dimension in the kit is printed twice, in inches and millimetres, and every PDF comes in a Letter and A4 edition, so nothing has to be converted or reprinted to be read anywhere. What stays local is a building code figure: those are marked in amber and always sent back to the authority where you live, which is what they are for a reader in Ohio as much as for one in Kent. The planning guidelines and the manufacturer dimensions are the published ones, and they are named on the page so you can weigh them against what is published where you are.
Was this reviewed by a designer or a contractor?
No, and you should be careful with any download that says it was without naming who. Built from published planning guidelines and manufacturer documentation, and every figure is printed next to the document it came from. There are 66 of those documents from 39 publishers, all listed on the sources page with links, so you can check any number yourself.
Does it tell me what my building code requires?
No, and nothing can, from a distance. Figures taken from a model code are labeled as such and carry the words verify locally, because a model code is a model until a jurisdiction adopts it. What applies to your property is decided by your building department.
Does it replace a designer, an architect or a contractor?
No. It gives you the figures they work to, in the order the decisions have to be made, so that you can read a plan, ask a better question and notice a problem while it is still a line on a screen. It does not look at your room and it does not make the decision.
Does it explain how to do the work?
No page in the kit explains how to carry out electrical, gas, plumbing or structural work, on purpose. Those are jobs for a licensed professional and the files say so wherever they come up. The kit is about deciding, not doing.
Is there a contract in it?
No. File 7 is a scope of work, which describes what is being done in enough detail that three quotes can be compared and a contract can be written by the people qualified to write one. It is not a contract, and the kit never supplies contract language.
I have already hired a contractor. Is it too late?
Usually not. The decisions that hurt are the ones that expire on your side of the table, one lead time before anybody needs the thing, and most of those are still open the week the contract is signed. File 1 tells you which ones are still open.
I am only doing a bathroom. Is half of it wasted?
The clearance, ventilation, wall and hiring files cover both rooms, and the kitchen specific pages are clearly marked so you can skip them. If you are doing only a kitchen, the same is true in reverse.
Can I print it?
Yes, as many times as you want, for your own project. Every PDF comes in a Letter and A4 edition, and both are designed to read in black and white, because that is what comes out of the printer in a house that is being remodeled.
How do I open the fillable PDFs?
Any PDF reader will show them. To type in them and keep what you typed, use Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free. Some browsers and some default previewers do not save every field type reliably.
Do I need Excel for the workbooks?
No. They are plain .xlsx files and they open in Excel, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets and LibreOffice. There are no macros, so nothing has to be enabled and nothing can run.
What is the order bump?
A 19 USD add on offered once, at checkout: the Lighting, Outlet and Plumbing Plan Pack, 14 pages of scaled grids and a symbol legend for marking what you want before the electrician and the plumber arrive. The kit is complete without it.
What is the upsell?
A 29 USD workbook, the Renovation Money Tracker, offered once after you buy. Four tabs that follow the money from the first budget to the last invoice. It is offered once, it is never shown again, and saying no changes nothing about what you already have.
Can I get a refund?
All sales are final. Every file is delivered the moment you pay. The whole order, including the bump and the upsell, is downloaded before you leave the payment page, so the sale is final. The one exception is a defective file, refunded within 30 days against a screenshot of the problem, and in practice we repair it faster than a refund clears. Changing your mind is not a refund, which is why every file, its page count and its limits are published on this site before you pay.
How long do the download links last?
The links last 72 hours, which is deliberate: download the files and keep them. If a link expires, write to us and we will send a new one. There is no time limit on asking.
Do you update the files?
We correct errors, and we update a figure when the document it came from publishes a new edition. Corrections are free and everybody who bought is told where to get them. We do not promise a new edition on a schedule.
Do you take money from manufacturers?
No. No affiliate commission, no sponsorship, no manufacturer money. The manufacturers named in the kit publish their documents publicly and have not reviewed, endorsed or supplied anything here. We have no stake in what you buy, which is the only reason the recommendations are worth reading.
What happens to my data?
Your email and your payment go to Stripe and to us, and that is all we keep. Measurement is off until you allow it if you are in Europe, the United Kingdom or Switzerland. The privacy page says exactly what is collected, for how long, and how to make us delete it.
